有别于教士或修士的人。通常被分为三类：１公民，包括除牧师、陆军、海军以外的全体国民，可再分为贵族和平民；２陆军；３海军。在美国，把人分为俗人和神职人员并无法律依据，只是约定俗成。

(2)外行；门外汉；非专业人员
指非属律师、演员、医师等专业的人员，尤指教士之外的人。
