单词 MERITOCRACY
释义

Because they possess merit, ‘intelligence plus effort’, and are not members of the privileged or wealthy class, those who deserve to wield power are this type of elite of governance. In theory, such a system evolves into an ‘equal opportunity’ society. In practice, however, a society without rules and concentrate power in only a few hands may result, becoming an restricted meritocracy. The UK sociologist Michael Young in his 1958 book, ‘The Rise Of Meritocracy’ first coined this term.
