单词 | asylum |
释义 | asylum asylum 1. a place of safety or retreat.2. a place where the mentally ill stay or are detailed. Mental hospitalis the modern equivalent. 3. a country other than that of a person unable to stay in his own. The applicant has to have a well-founded fear of persecution if returned (the Asylum and Immigration Appeals Act 1993, the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 and the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999). There has therefore to be a reasonable degree of likelihood that he will be prosecuted for a conventional reason. There has to be a NEXUS demonstrated between persecution and one of, or a combination of, the five enumerated grounds as stated in the 1951 Convention Relat- ing to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol. The five enu- merated grounds are race, religion, nationality, membership of a par- ticular social group and political opinion. In the UK, political asylum is often granted whereas economic asylum, the seeking of an econom- ically more secure place, is not. |
