traverse 1. vb. In civil proceedings, to deny an allegation of fact made in a statement of case. 2. n. (in civil proceedings) The denial itself. Under Part 16 of the Civil Procedure Rules a defence must state which allegations in the particulars of claim are denied. In addition, where the defendant denies an allegation he must state his reasons for doing so; if he intends to put forward a different version of events to that put forward by the claimant, he must state his own version. A defendant who fails to deal with an allegation may be taken to admit that allegation. |
