gender pay gap The difference between the average earnings (or wage or salary) of men and women in a given workforce or business. From 2017 the government requires employers of over 250 employees to report on such differences, on the basis of data captured from the payroll on a given date each year (Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017). This “snapshot date” is 5 April for the private and voluntary sectors and 31 March for public bodies. The publication of such data has led to claims that women are significantly disadvantaged in the workplace, in so far as data trends point to male staff being paid more than women for the same or similar work in over half of all sectors.
