information n. The written statement by which a prosecutor informs a magistrate of the offence for which a summons or warrant is required. A person who lays an information before a magistrate is an informant (see laying an information). An information must contain a statement that describes the offence in ordinary language, identify any legislation that creates it, and include such particulars of the conduct constituting the commission of the offence as to make clear what the prosecutor alleges against the defendant (Criminal Procedure Rules). The Criminal Justice Act 2003 also provides for a written charge and requisition for the accused to appear before the magistrates. |
