National Audit Office (NAO) An independent body established in 1983 to scrutinize public spending on behalf of Parliament. The NAO audits the financial statements of all central government departments, agencies, and other public bodies and reports its findings to the Public Accounts Commission. It also carries out value-for-money studies, local audits, and other investigations. The public audit perspective is intended to help Parliament hold government to account and to improve the efficiency of public services. |
