prostitution n. The exchange of money for sex. By definition, prostitution involves at least two parties: the prostitute, who accepts money in exchange for engaging in sexual activity (or in virtue of whose sexual activity money is paid to a third-party profiteer), and the prostitute user, who pays money in order to engage in sexual activity with the prostitute. Prostitution commonly involves one or more third-party profiteers, including pimps (who offer prostitutes for the purpose of exploiting their prostitution for gain or profit), brothel managers, or traffickers (Sexual Offences Act 2003 s 57–60). Prostitution per se is not illegal, but there exist several offences relating to prostitution, including soliciting, kerb crawling, keeping or managing a brothel, causing or inciting prostitution for gain, controlling prostitution for gain, trafficking into the UK for sexual exploitation, trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation, and trafficking out of the UK for sexual exploitation. Offences relating to the sexual exploitation of children are governed by sections 47–50 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (as amended by the Serious Crime Act 2015).
