Public Health England (PHE) An organization created as part of the restructuring of the National Health Service in 2013. The role of Public Health England was to coordinate a national public health service, to build an evidence base to support local public health services, to provide leadership to the public health delivery system, and to support the development of the public health work force. An executive agency of the Department of Health, PHE worked with local and national government, industry, and the NHS. In April 2021 PHE was replaced by a new body, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA); the move was intended to boost the UK’s ability to resist COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
