takeover n. The acquisition of control by one company over another, usually smaller, company (the target company). This is usually achieved (1) by buying shares in the target company with the agreement of all its members (if they are few) or of only its controllers; (2) by purchases on the Stock Exchange; or (3) by means of a takeover bid.
