Treaty of Nice A treaty that was signed by the member states of the European Union on 26 February 2001 and that came into force on 1 February 2003. The Treaty’s main purpose was to prepare the EU institutions for the enlargement to 25 member states in May 2004. It also extended the policy areas covered by the codecision procedure, giving more power to the European Parliament. See also Constitutional Treaty of the European Union. |
