commercial agent An agent who solicits business from potential customers on behalf of a principal. In the EU the contracts of many commercial agents are governed by directive 86/653, which gives them substantial rights to claim compensation or an indemnity on termination of their agency agreement and implies other terms into their contracts; for example, in relation to payment of commission and notice periods for termination of the agreement. In Great Britain this directive is implemented by the Commercial Agents (Council Directive) Regulations 1993 as amended with similar regulations for Northern Ireland. |
