deep seabed area Under Article 1 of the 1982 United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty, this is defined as being the ocean floor and its subsoil beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (i.e. beyond territorial waters and any claimed economic exclusion zone). By international agreement, the resources within this area (often referred to in the literature as simply “the Area”) are the common heritage of mankind. Under the 1982 Treaty the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is mandated to control and regulate deep seabed mining in the area. See also high seas. |
