Disability Living Allowance (DLA) A tax-free benefit payable to those under 65 who have had a disability requiring help for at least three months and are likely to need such help for at least a further six months. It has two components: a care component, payable at three rates to those needing help with personal care; and a mobility component, payable at two rates to those aged three or over who need help with walking. The rates depend on the level of help required. For most claimants disability living allowance was replaced by a Personal Independence Payment from April 2013. Claimants over 65 continue to receive the allowance and there are no plans to replace it for those under the age of 16. |
