Referendum on Continued Membership of the European Union The referendum authorized by the European Referendum Act 2015 and held in the UK on 23 June 2016 on the question “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” A turnout of 72.2% resulted in a 52% vote to leave. The question of whether the referendum result was binding, or merely advisory to lawmakers in Parliament, was decided in (No. 1)">Miller’s case (No. 1), in which the Supreme Court ruled that the government could not begin the process of withdrawing from the EU without a further Act of Parliament. The European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Act 2017 was duly passed. The UK officially left the EU on 31 January 2020, subject to an implementation period that lasted until 31 December 2020.
