electronic data interchange (EDI) The use of electronic data-transmission networks to exchange business information in the form of approved standard messages, with little or no human intervention. EDI is primarily used by large companies to create a uniform processing system for e.g. invoices and purchase orders. Significant commercial contracts set out the terms on which such information is supplied, and much commerce is now done on this basis (known as paperless trading), either through a closed network to which only members of a limited group have access, or through the Internet. Some international legal rules have been agreed in this field, including the Uniform Rules of Conduct for Interchange of Trade Data by Teletransmission (see UNCID). When using EDI both parties should adhere to the same standards for the transmission of data segments. |
