family assistance order A court order under the Children Act 1989 that a Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service officer, or an officer of a local authority, should advise, assist, and befriend a particular child or a person closely connected with the child (such as a parent) in order to provide short-term support for the family. The order can be made only with the consent of the person it concerns (other than the child) and has effect for up to twelve months. |
