gazump vb. To raise the price of, or accept a higher offer for, land or buildings on which a sale price has been agreed but no legally binding contract has yet been made (see exchange of contracts). The intending purchaser has no legal right either to compel the vendor to sell to him at the agreed price or to recover his wasted expenditure (such as surveyor’s and solicitor’s charges) unless an agreement, such as a lock-out agreement, has been signed. The converse practice, in which the buyer reduces an agreed offer immediately before exchange of contracts, is known as gazundering. |
