gig economy A job market in which engagements tend to be short-term, freelance, or part-time; people are taken on for the “gig”, that is to say, for a specific limited purpose at a particular time (e.g. parcel delivery at Christmas). Employers often claim that this provides the self-employed contractor, freelancer, or temporary employee with varied work experience and the flexibility of choosing how and when to work. Those engaged may retort that by not being classed as an employee or worker they are deprived of basic employment benefits and protections, such as guaranteed pay and the right to paid leave. Concern at the rise of the gig economy has led to several UK government initiatives, notably the 2017 Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices. These new kinds of flexible working have also provoked important legal challenges, as in the cases Uber BV and others v Aslam and others [2021] UKSC 5 and Pimlico Plumbers Limited and Anor v Smith [2018] UKSC 29. |
