imputation n. In criminal proceedings, an allegation of misconduct or bad character made by a defendant against another person. Under the Criminal Justice Act 2003, where the defendant adduces evidence attacking another person’s character, or where evidence is given of an imputation about another person made by the defendant on being questioned or charged, the defendant may, with leave of the court, be cross-examined about his own previous convictions and bad character. |
