investigation of a company An inquiry into the running of a company made by inspectors appointed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy acting under the Companies Act 1985. It may be ordered by the Secretary of State, on his own initiative or upon application by the shareholders or the company itself, or by the court. Such an inquiry may be held to supply company members with information or to investigate fraud, unfair prejudice, or nominee shareholders. The inspectors’ report is usually published. Investigations can also be carried out by the Financial Conduct Authority in accordance with the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, such as in cases of insider dealing. |
