letter of request (rogatory letter, letter rogatory) 1. A letter issued to a foreign court asking a judicial authority to take the evidence of some person within that court’s jurisdiction (Civil Procedure Rules Part 34). The resulting deposition may be read at a subsequent court hearing. Since 2004 there has been a special procedure for taking depositions from persons in member states of the European Union. 2. A document by which personal representatives may transfer a deceased’s shares to beneficiaries of the estate. In practice there is no advantage over use of a stock transfer form (see share transfer) and letters of request are rarely used. |
