loss leader A product or service offered for sale by an organization at a loss in order to attract customers. The Competition Act 1998 prohibits predatory pricing by dominant companies in the UK; Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union applies in the EU. Non-dominant companies, however, are largely free to set their own resale pricing policy as long as they do not specify the resale prices their customers will sell the products at.
