Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 An Act that came into force in March 2014 enabling same-sex couples to marry. It also sets out the consequences for other areas of law and provides for the conversion of civil partnerships into marriages. Importantly, the Act provides for the interpretation of existing legislation: the term “spouse” now refers to both heterosexual and same-sex couples; any reference to “marriage” includes marriage of a same-sex couple; “husband” includes a man who is married to another man; and “wife” includes a woman who is married to another woman. Religious organizations may generally opt in to the solemnization of same-sex marriages, but by statute the Church of England is currently unable to solemnize them. |
