plea bargaining In criminal proceedings, an agreement between the prosecution and the defence by which the accused agrees to plead guilty to a lesser charge in return for an offer by the prosecution (for example, to offer no evidence on a more serious charge against the accused). Although a plea must always be made voluntarily and free from any improper pressure, a defendant in the Crown Court is entitled to seek an indication from the judge of the maximum sentence that would be imposed if he were to plead guilty. |
