Northern Ireland Assembly A body established under the Northern Ireland Act 1998. It consists of 90 elected members and has limited primary legislative powers in such areas as agriculture, the environment, economic development, health, education, and social security. Powers in relation to policing and justice were transferred to the Assembly on 12 April 2010. Its powers are discharged by an Executive Committee of 12 ministers, which is appointed on a power-sharing basis. The Assembly was suspended in October 2002 but restored in May 2007; it was not formally convened between 2017 and 2020. See also devolution. |
