suspended sentence
A sentence of imprisonment that does not take effect immediately. Under the Criminal Justice Act 2003, a court that passes a suspended sentence may order the offender to comply with one or more of a number of specified requirements (see community order). If during the specified period the offender fails to comply with a requirement imposed by the court, or commits a further offence, the court may order that the original sentence is to take effect. |
