quarter sessions Originally, a court of record with quarterly meetings of the justices of the peace for a county. City and borough quarter sessions were presided over by the recorder sitting alone. In modern times, quarter sessions became a court for the trial of offences triable on indictment, other than those that had to be tried at assizes. Quarter sessions were abolished by the Courts Act 1971 and their jurisdiction is now exercised by the Crown Court. |
