receiver n. 1. A person appointed by the court under Part 69 of the Civil Procedure Rules to preserve and protect property during the course of litigation. See also equitable execution. 2. A person appointed under the terms of a debenture or by the court to realize assets charged and apply the proceeds for the benefit of those entitled. Notice of appointment must be given to the Registrar of Companies and must appear upon business documents. The receiver may have power to manage the company. See also administrative receiver; official receiver. 3. In criminal proceedings, a person appointed with certain powers in respect of the property and affairs of a person who has obtained such property in the course of criminal conduct and who has been convicted of an offence. |
