supervision order An order of the court placing a child under the supervision of a designated local authority. It is the duty of the relevant “supervisor” to “advise, assist and befriend the supervised child”, as well as “to take such steps as are reasonably necessary to give effect to the order” (Children Act 1989 s 35). The court can make a supervision order only if certain threshold criteria are satisfied. A supervisor may have wide powers, for example to ensure that the child lives as directed or attends specified activities; in addition, the supervisor may apply for an education supervision order if the child is of compulsory school age and not receiving adequate education. A supervision order does not confer parental responsibility and initially lasts only for one year with a possible extension for up to a maximum of three years. Compare care order. |
