maladministration n. A key term introduced by the Parliamentary Commissioner Act 1967 as the basis for claims under the new Parliamentary Ombudsman scheme, which established a form of non-judicial redress of grievances arising from “maladministration” by government departments. The scheme was set up largely as a response to the Crichel Down Affair (1954), a scandal that highlighted the lack of alternative remedies at that time. |
