cabotage n. Transport services provided in one member state of the EU by a carrier of another state. Article 91 (formerly 71 and before that 75) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (previously Treaty of Rome) provides that the Council of the European Union may lay down proposals in relation to the conditions under which nonresident carriers may operate transport services within a member state. From 1 January 2021, when the Brexit implementation period came to an end, some special arrangements relating to cabotage apply between the EU and the UK. |
