commissioner for oaths A person appointed by the Lord Chief Justice to administer oaths or take affidavits. By statute, every solicitor who holds a practising certificate has the powers of a commissioner for oaths, but he may not exercise these powers in proceedings in which he is acting for any of the parties or in which he is interested. Thus, when an affidavit must be sworn, the client cannot use his own solicitor but must go to another solicitor to witness the swearing. |
