company name (registered name) The title of a registered company, as stated in the application for registration, on the company’s certificate of incorporation, and in the Register of Companies. The names with which companies can be registered are restricted (see business name). The name must appear clearly in full outside the registered office and other business premises, upon the company seal, and upon certain documents issuing from the company, including notepaper and invoices (Companies Act 2006 s 82–85; Companies (Trading Disclosure Regulations) 2008). Noncompliance is an offence and fines can be levied. Under the Insolvency Act 1986, it may be an offence for a director of a company that has gone into insolvent liquidation to re-use the company name (Insolvency Act 1986 s 216).
