contemptuous damages A very small sum of damages awarded when, although the claimant is technically entitled to succeed, the court thinks that the action should not have been brought. Contemptuous damages are sometimes awarded in actions for defamation where harm to reputation is deemed minimal (Grobbelaar v News Group Newspapers Ltd [2002] UK UL 40, [2002] 1 WLR 3024). |
