funeral expenses
Reasonable funeral expenses are a first charge on the assets of the deceased, payable out of the estate before any other debt or duty. This includes the cost of a tomb or gravestone (Stanton v Ewart F. Youlden Ltd [1960] 1 WLR 543; HMRC Statement of Practice SP7/87). Such expenses are deductible in calculating inheritance tax (Inheritance Tax Act 1984 s 172).
