remission n. Cancellation of part of a prison sentence. Formerly, a prisoner could earn remission of one-third of his sentence by good behaviour in prison and was released upon remission without any conditions. However, a prisoner serving an extended sentence, or a prisoner serving more than 18 months’ imprisonment, who was under the age of 21 when sentenced, could only be released on licence (see parole). Remission of a sentence for good conduct was abolished by the Criminal Justice Act 1991 and the Criminal Justice Act 2003, which specifies the conditions now required for the early release of prisoners. |
