rent assessment committee A committee that decides any dispute concerning the amount of a fair rent determined by a rent officer for a tenancy of a dwelling-house under the Rent Act 1977 (where it still applies). This is subject to the Rent Acts (Maximum Fair Rent) Order 1999, which imposed a limit on fair rents by reference to a formula based on a variation in the Retail Price Index. A rent assessment committee may also, on application by a tenant, determine whether a proposed increase in rent for an assured tenancy (under the Housing Act 1988) is what the landlord could obtain on the open market and, if not, it may fix what this should be.
