impersonation n. Pretending to be another person. It is an offence (rape) to impersonate a woman’s partner or someone else known to her in order to persuade her to have sexual intercourse (R v Elbekkay [1995] Crim LR 163), to impersonate the holder of a Crown office in order to gain access to prohibited places, and to impersonate a police officer, a variety of public officials, a voter, or a juror. Obtaining property, services, or certain financial advantages through impersonation may amount to a crime of fraud. In 2016 Crown prosecutors decided not to bring rape or other charges against a number of undercover policemen who had begun long-term intimate relationships (in some cases fathering children) while living under a false identity (see deception). |
