volunteer n. 1. A person who, in relation to any transaction, has not given valuable consideration. 2. A person who engages in an activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something for the benefit of others. Volunteers may offer their services under a formal arrangement with public, private, or voluntary (charitable) organizations, or may volunteer informally within their community. In general terms, because volunteers are unpaid they do not qualify as employees or workers for the purpose of employment protection rights. Nor are they protected under the Equality Act 2010 from discrimination (X v Mid-Sussex Citizens Advice Bureau [2012] UKSC 59, [2013] IRLR 146). |
