service n. 1. The steps required by rules of court to bring documents used in court proceedings to a person’s attention. Under Part 6 of the Civil Procedure Rules service of a document may be made by leaving the document with the person concerned (see personal service); by first class post; by leaving the document at the address for service given by that person; through a document exchange (DX); or by fax or other means of electronic communication. The Civil Procedure Rules also provide for service by an alternative method (formerly known as substituted service) where there is good reason, as where the defendant is evading service. 2.
