in rem [Latin: against the thing] 1. Describing a right that should be respected by other people generally, such as ownership of property, as distinct from a right in personam. 2. Describing a court action that is directed against an item of property, rather than against a person. A court’s jurisdiction in rem is its authority to exercise its power over a thing (typically nonmovable property such as land) or a status (e.g. a person’s marital status). Actions in rem are a feature of the Admiralty Court. |
