letters of administration Authority granted by the court to a specified person to act as an administrator of a deceased person’s estate when the deceased dies intestate (Non-Contentious Probate Rules 1987 r 22). In certain circumstances, letters of administration may be granted for limited purposes to persons not entitled to deal with the whole estate (see ad colligenda bona; durante absentia). Letters of administration are also granted with the will annexed cum testamento annexo where the deceased’s will does not appoint executors.
