parenting order An order, introduced by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, that requires the parent or guardian of a child under the age of 16 to comply, for a period not exceeding 12 months, with such requirements as the court considers necessary for preventing offences being committed by this child. Parents whose children have been made the subject of a child safety order or similar may be required to attend courses that will assist them with their parenting skills. The rationale behind the introduction of such orders was that inadequate parental supervision is thought to be strongly associated with youth offending. |
