post-adoption contact Contact between a child and his or her birth family after an adoption order has been made. Contact after adoption is a contentious issue, the traditional view under English law being that it was contrary to the very nature of adoption. Under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 the court is now under a duty when making an adoption order to consider whether arrangements should be made to allow the child to maintain links with his or her birth family, and a specific order was later created (ss 51A–B). However, while most adopted children in fact have some form of post-adoption contact with their birth families, it remains very rare for courts to order such contact. |
