rollover relief A relief that enables a tax charge on a capital gain to be deferred when the proceeds from the disposal of an asset are reinvested in a new asset (Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 s 152). Any gain arising from the disposal of the new asset will be correspondingly increased (unless the gain is, once more, “rolled over”). Rollover relief is only available for the following types of asset: land and buildings used for a trade; fixed machinery and plant; ships, aircraft, and hovercraft; satellites, space stations, and space vehicles; goodwill; specified agricultural and fishing quotas; rights of a member of a Lloyd’s Syndicate; oil licences (s 155). |
