cloning n. The asexual production of a human organism that is genetically identical to a currently existing or previously existing human being. This is accomplished by replacing the nucleus of an egg with the nuclear material of a donor cell. If the resulting embryo is implanted into a womb with the aim of producing a child, this is referred to as reproductive cloning, a process which is currently unlawful under the Human Fertilization and Embryology Act 2008. Where the cloned embryo is created for medical research or in order to produce cells that will be transplanted into a person suffering from some disability or illness, the process is referred to as therapeutic cloning. Such a process may be lawful if licensed by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority. |
