n. [From Latin: rubrica (terra): red (earth)] The title of a statute, such titles formerly being published in letters of red. The rubric serves to show the intent of the legislature and thus forms a means by which the Act can be interpreted. The term is also, more rarely, used to refer to the headnote to a case. |
