public body Any body, corporate or otherwise, that performs its duties and exercises its powers for the public benefit, as opposed to private gain. Under the Local Government Act 1972, public bodies include local authorities, trustees, commissioners, and those who have duties to provide cemeteries and markets and act for the improvement of any place, or who have powers to issue or levy precepts. The Public Bodies Act 2011 empowered ministers to abolish or reform those public bodies listed in its schedules, with the aim of increasing accountability and controlling costs. |
