secure accommodation Accommodation provided for a child looked after by a local authority (see looked-after child) in which his or her liberty is restricted. Such accommodation can only be used where the criteria in the Children Act 1989 s 25 are met. The child in question must either (i) have a history of absconding from other accommodation and be likely to suffer significant harm if he absconds again, or (ii) be likely to injure himself or others if he does not have his liberty restricted. A local authority can keep a looked-after child in secure accommodation for up to 72 hours without a court order, but beyond this court sanction is required. Secure accommodation should only be used as a last resort. |
